was a little smaller than there $30.00 pots but will grow
i put  a bunch of banana peels under it for fertilizer

and i put up a hanging plate with a plateful of bananas to see if any fruit flies produce out of that at all
and see if any birds try just eating them

going to open up some space around the rosebush i'm trying to revive,,it has flagstone it seems around it,,which it won't be for long

and the male broad tailed seems to only feed at the saucer and even came over to the window to find it there where it was placed before

yesterday and this morning

yesterday was very little activity,,saw the male at the saucer and the female once at the main

but i think i saw my first calliope just now,,the throat resembles the markings of pictures but it looked black,,it was trying every port on the feeder and hovering alot..right away i knew it was different

and my mom got her first oriole yesterday also,,guess the new feeder paid off having and setting it up

Feeder down

well the twine holding the feeder didn't hold up to the weight of it
saw something go down in the corner of my eye and looked out and it wasn't hanging there anymore

nothing broke just a hairline crack i saw inside
have noticed a few drops but that could be from refilling it again

did only see a couple birds,,once today,, the male broadtailed  and female

Rain - Hail

well it rained hard for a couple hours and hailed for about 5 minutes

the male broad tailed came once and a new bird possibly a female anna just once,,she was short and fat ,,green and white belly

new bird

saw a new bird this aft,,was totally green and a reddish belly,,possibly a juvenile ? just hovered in front of the feeder but didn't drink any

and the 2 other birds just made maybe 1-2 appearances

was cloudy and some wind,,suppose to rain tonight

fresh new water

put in fresh water  in the feeder as it was almost out ,,filled it to about 50

saw the male broadtailed once this morning and that was the only time
the female has been sparsely thru the day

yesterday

same 2 birds,,the make and female broadtailed, seem the only ones showing up
put some more banana peels in the container,,no fruit flys yet

i  did move the saucer feeder over on the clothes line for the birds to empty that

little activity

just saw the male and female broad tailed today once,,so the bugs must be abundant

Saturday, April 21, 2012

todays activity

same few birds as there have been..around the same  number of visits,,did put out a couple more banana peels in the container,,no fruit  flys as of yet

backyard sightings

with the warmer weather the activity has dropped the past couple days,,more likely with bugs and so forth to feed on
just have a new female broad tailed showed up yesterday,,i can tell shes new as she flaps her wings and settles down after a bit to drink

the only other one is the male broad tailed feeding on both feeders,,the only one that does so far

i made up a hanging nesting cage as its called,,saw it for sale for around $13 and made one for free out of chicken wire,,filled it with dryer lint and hung it on the closeline next to the nesting box for them to gather from

also put out the plastic container containing 5 apple cores,,2 over ripe bananas and 2 apples,,put in 2 more bananas today to attract fruit flys for the birds

seems i'm going to wait for Watters garden to get their trumpet vines in stock ready to sell to plant one in the backyard

Yesterday oriole feeder

went out to my parent's house and put up their new oriole feeder,,had to do other things out there too and watched what was coming to there hummingbird feeder

was a female and male black chinned thru out the day till dark that was observed

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

First Rufous visit

today just before 10 AM a Rufous decided to make a quick stop,,just saw him once and never came back thru the day
the same other birds visited all day and no breaks in the middle of the day like it has been

the black chinned came back this afternoon till dark

Monday, April 16, 2012

todays activity

had numerous visits today,,thought the snow day was busy and today puts it to shame
usually during the mid day to afternoon there hasn't been any activity but today there was
i'm basing it on the new feeder where they can sit and drink and look around a bit instead of hovering with  the old one
no one has even touched the old one just hanging 5 feet away

i've had the anna back which has been territorial
and a green one with a light brown belly
a smaller green one with a light tanish white belly

New Feeder

put up my new 32 ounce feeder where i had my saucer feeder at and moved the saucer next to the window

just 1 bird today in the late afternoon after 5 was all green but tiny compared to the birds that have been here

put out the apple cores in the plastic pretzel container for them to have fruit flys attracted to that and make more flys for the birds to eat

was a light to mild rain this aft so that might had been a reason for the lack of birds

Enhancing my Backyard

a few things i've done to enhance my backyard to attract hummingbirds and regular birds are

1: put out 2 old metal refrigerator drawers for water
2: 1 8 ounce hummingbird saucer feeder
3: 1 nesting box with Dryer lint for making nests
4: cut up lots of little branches into useable nesting material

upcoming things going in
a 32 ounce hummingbird feeder so there will be 2 feeders in the backyard
and a trumpet vine to grow on the clothes line for the birds to feed off from

Snow Day

4/14/2012,3:11 pm ,snow today and inch so far with melting and still snowing,,1 chunky Anna showed up in the early afternoon for a quick drink,,had another bird show up,,tanish green,,no other markings,,make that 2 more birds showing up today,,i fat chunky all green one and the black headed one i looked around and sems to be a female black chinned,,cannot see any violet on its neck,,just a white band below the neckline

Time of Feeder put out

put out my feeder in early march ..1st week i think
since then have had 8 different birds show up,,most Anna's ,,1 kinda thin tan and green,,1 with a black head and and orange patch on its throat,,a couple of fat Annas
